So if you are like me and you have ever found yourself passing the hours in an airport terminal, and because you are bored, it is easy to pass the time people-watching. For some strange reason, I find people fascinating in their own environment. Whether it is the wardrobe they decide to put on, or the companions they select as company, there is something truly telling about observing people in their element. And yet at the same time, you can’t help but notice some behaviors from so-called “adults” that are really quite shocking.

Now guys, I don’t claim to have all the answers, but in my time observing, I was frequently stunned by the way some folks decided to interact with one another—particularly those who appeared to be married. To give you an example, I witnessed a truly heart-wrenching exchange between a couple, man and a woman and I am telling you, the behavior I saw this man display was absolutely saddening.

Now you know I’ve spent quite a bit of time on this blog reflecting on marriage and the fundamental way we choose to interact with one another. In fact, I actually wrapped up a two-part series where we explored the idea of killing people with kindness and the power of paying it forward (links are down below). It’s amazing how simple, everyday choices that you and I make change everything for our friends, but especially for our spouses.

Yet as I stood there, witnessing that scene with growing frustration, seeing a husband choose to be so deliberately cruel toward his spouse, it truly broke my heart. In the end, fueled by his own anger, he simply walked away—leaving her stranded and solitary in that terminal. I couldn’t help but wonder, watching from afar, how a couple like this ever began their journey together? When you witness such a tragic decline, you have to ask yourself… were there ever any better times?

Yet when I think about this now, and everything that led up to that moment I witnessed in the terminal it hit me that all those simple, everyday choices between that couple somewhere along the way were broken. He went from kindness to cruelty. And that point alone seems to be forgotten by people who are rushing through their life and travels, just trying to reach the next destination.

And what is just plain sad is that, some people’s hard wired reaction towards other people is just cruelty…

I’m telling you, it’s truly painful to witness these moments. Because when you strip everything else away, our FAMILY is our only true legacy and if we decide to treat our loved ones with the same coldness I saw in the airport that day,

You will end up being alone.

And even though you may not see this in your present situation, it will be a tragedy in the future when it comes to pass. Guys, here is the truth, these situations can be avoided. Moreover, it doesn’t take a genius to choose kindness.

Jesus was asked what was the greatest Commandment of all, and he replied, “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” John 15:13

And then he said…“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” John 13:33

Or, “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her”  Ephesians 5:25

Or, “Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them.” Colossians 3:19

Guys, as husbands and fathers, we are called to love, encourage, and build up our families…not destroy.

If you have anger problems, I encourage you to seek help from your pastor…and when the opportunity presents itself, choose kindness.

Until next time Guys,

1 Take a Stand

I originally wrote this post 2 years ago in June of 2013 and yet it still has huge relevancy as America continues to change before our eyes. I am calling out the men again to take a stand in their own homes and be strong and be who you have been called to be for your family. I ask that you read this post with the same urgency it was written 2 years ago and now…

The Ironman Strength blog has always been about MEN being strong in God and taking on the challenges that this life sends our way and this post is no different. Guys, I sense some indecisiveness out there. Maybe you have some doubt in your lives that if left alone, could cause some very serious problems for you and your family down the road. Please read this post with the same urgency that I write it and please take it to heart because our America is changing. I begin with a verse for warriors that I hope you will apply today…

But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” (Joshua 24:15 NIV)

This is a great verse because it is clear and to the point. When Joshua wrote this verse, he knew he was going to die. He had fought the good fight for God and now he was old but before God took him into heaven, Joshua spoke to the children of Israel and gave them two options about their spiritual future; either serve God…or don’t serve Him. They had already experienced the power of God throughout their daily journey as they moved through the promised land and continually overcame obstacles that were more than they could have ever withstood on their own…And now, here they stood on the precipice of the most important decision any of them would ever make for their future…and with Joshua gone…would they give in and serve the gods of the existing tribes around them…or…would they take a stand and serve the God who had brought them to where they were now?

What is critical to note here though is Joshua’s final opinion on the two options he gave Israel. He said, “as for me and my household, we will serve The Lord”. As was typical of the rock who Joshua was, he did not waver or falter…he spoke from his heart and it was solid.

Joshua was one of the most powerful warriors in Biblical history who served God with all he had and when the end of his life was near, he took his final stand in front of his nation and announced who he and his household would serve…

My question to you is…which option have you chosen for you and your house?

Have you taken the stand for yourself and firmly planted your feet on the solid ground before God?

I believe that now is time to “man up” in your relationship with God…You need to make a decision and then stick with it…It is your responsibility to shield both you and your family from the harm that Satan seeks to wreak upon the people you care about. Now is NOT a time for doubt, it is a time for clarity. Otherwise you will be like this;

But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. (James 1:6 NIV)

Everyone has seen seaweed being tossed back and forth inside waves with no stability whatsoever. That seaweed could end up anywhere because it has broken away from its stronghold under the sea. Guys, if you doubt, that will be you being thrown around in this world like broken seaweed in the waves…with nothing to hold onto…being tossed around with no idea where you will end up…

Trust me here…that is NOT God’s plan for you OR your family.

Guys, I challenge you right now to be the warrior God intended you to be by taking a stand inside your house by protecting your wife and kids from what Satan seeks to do them. It starts by clinging onto our God who is a rock and a fortress and will always be there for us…

I challenge you to be like Joshua and declare to the world…

As for me and my house, we will serve The Lord…

Who will you choose to serve?

Until next time guys…

responsibility

Responsibility. Have you ever considered where it comes from? Is it an inherited trait we get from our parents or grand parents? Is it inside of our ancestral DNA? Why do some people “feel” responsibility and others do not? Why do some kids learn it and others do not? Why do some adults learn it and other do not? Responsibility. It’s not a difficult word but it can be even more difficult to carry out. Webster defines responsibility as:

The state or fact of being responsible, answerable, or accountable for something within one’s power, control or management.

This is my definition:

Responsibility is doing something we don’t want to do at a time when we don’t want to do it…but we do it anyway.

All I know is it seems to be lacking in this world today and I would like to know where it went? You see in my mind, without responsibility what we know and love is changing into something we don’t know and won’t love. Now I know that responsibility is not the only characteristic that is missing or fading in this world today but it’s on my mind and I wanted to write about it to kind of get it off of my chest.

Like you maybe, I wasn’t born into riches…I wasn’t poor either but yet I was taught to take care of what I had and make it last. I was taught to pick up after myself, eat everything on my plate and most importantly, make sure those daily chores were finished before I got to do anything I wanted to do…Hmmmm…I guess I was taught to be responsible.

Now I will tell you that this post isn’t a knock on parenting or those various skill sets that some of us have and some of us don’t…this is a comment on values, and what we all think is important to cultivate in our family. In my opinion, responsibility is a value that is critical for not only for family peace, but success in life.

I had someone tell me the other day that what I was asking him to do “was not his job”. I informed him that this particular task is ALL of our responsibility…everyone who works here must participate in this task for this company to be successful. He just looked at me like I was an alien.

Is that really what we’ve come to as a society where responsibility is as foreign to us as the Edsel automobile from years ago? (Seriously, Google…Edsel) Look…I am NOT a self-help guy where I will give you a 5 step program to get responsibility back into your lives…that is NOT what this post is about. All I want you to do is to think about…does this matter to you? Is responsibility important to you or your wife? Do you want it to be important to your children? If the answer is yes, I am simply suggesting you act by trying to put up some “responsibility guardrails” in your life for you and your family…right now.

I can guarantee that you will be glad you did…and so will your kids…although they probably wont tell you that…

Until next time guys…
