I had the opportunity to spend some time with an old work friend recently who I hadn’t seen for a long time. At one point, we had worked together every day for two years but after I left that company, I lost touch with him. But as luck would have it, I had the chance to re-connect with him over some dinner so I took advantage.

As you can imagine, we talked about the usual work stuff and family stuff but somehow the topic bent toward him planning to win the lottery.

To be clear, in MY mind, that topic was mentally wasting energy because the chances of winning are not worth spending the time thinking about what you would do with all that money. But as I sat there and listened to my friend talk, I realized he had taken this lottery-planning topic to a whole new level.

Honestly, the amount of detail he had already planned out was utterly amazing. He knew what businesses and stocks he would invest in, who he planned to give money to, and how much. He knew what upgrades he would make to his home, where he would take his first vacation, how he would quit his job, and the list went on and on.

He even worked out a plan to help his kids pay off their student loans, buy his parents, sister, and nephews new homes…and guys, I could keep going. I finally interrupted him and asked him why? Why would you invest so much of your time and brainpower on a topic that will most likely NEVER happen?

He replied simply, “ah, but it could, and I want to be prepared”

“Prepared”, I thought. “That is an Interesting concept.”

From your perspective, what does it really take to be prepared for anything? Investing your time and brain power towards something helps one be prepared. However, from a Christian persepctive, Christ told us to prepare by storing up for ourselves, treasures in Heaven.

In other words, preparation for eternity…not preparation for winning the lottery, or for that matter, anything else here on earth. Besides, like my Dad always used to say, “you can’t take it with you”.

But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust can consume, and where thieves can neither break through nor steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Matt. 6:20-21

So what is a treasure in heaven? How can I have any connection with heaven while I am still here and living on this earth?

Here is how I look at this; my friend was investing huge amounts of his physical time thinking about a fantasy event rather than thinking about how to make a difference now.

For example, how about spending more time with his kids, or his wife, or both? What about focusing on or engaging with a particular subject that might make him better or even the people around him better?

The way I see it, all of these suggestions are treasures that are being stored in heaven for him. It truly is like making a deposit in a bank or better yet, it’s an investment in your heavenly eternal future.

Jesus said, “How will they know me? By how YOU love one another”

Pretty simple actually. If we take the time to be kind to someone, anyone…when you aren’t required to do so… it helps them, but believe it or not, that is also a treasure YOU have stored in heaven.

What you do here on earth is preparation for your eternal future…and it is SAFE

You see…everything we store up in heaven is safe…forever. There are not any malware or viruses that can wipe out your deposits in Heaven. Christ said in that same verse above, where neither moth nor rust can consume, and where thieves can neither break through nor steal.

NOTHING can destroy what you have stored there…It is safe for all eternity

My simple advice:

Why don’t we try to get out of our own way and focus on each other for a change, and watch what happens…

What I think you will find is a far happier group of family and friends because you aren’t 100% solely focused on you…or like my friend at the beginning of this post, who simply spent too much time planning for something that would never happen

So as you begin to look and plan for this next year, 2026…my recommendation is to start making your own heavenly deposits sooner rather than later…

Honestly, your future depends on it…

Until next time Guys…

This is a short post to bring a quick “something for you to think about”. I heard a very interesting perspective from the pulpit this past Sunday of my local church and I could not help but appreciate the reality this Pastor shared with us.

He asked a question that I wanted to ask you; What is your 500-year plan?

I wasn’t completely clear on what he meant. I’m the guy who is just trying to figure out how I am going to put my kids through college and hopefully still have enough left over to retire. That is my 10-20 year plan at best…let alone 500. Does that sound familiar to you? Now, I am sure many of you are far better than I am about saving for your future retirement, and kudos to you for creating a solid plan for your “what’s next”. But for the rest of us, the future is a genuine concern. How in the world can anyone save enough to make the next stage of our lives really work?

Then I heard this point; we get so focused on planning for our earthly futures which includes our Investments, Life Insurance, Home Equity, IRAs, 401Ks, and the list goes on that we forget the real reason why we are here. Which is…?

This is why I am asking you the same question again…

What is your 500-year plan? Do you know where you will be in 500 years? I know this sounds like a dumb question but the Bible is clear when it tells us to lay up our treasures in Heaven which moth cannot destroy.

Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Matthew 6:19-21

Life is short so Moses wrote in Psalms 90 the following verse:

The years of our life are seventy, or even by reason of strength eighty; yet their span is but toil and trouble; they are soon gone, and we fly away.   Psalm 90:10

SO…AFTER FURTHER REVIEW…WHAT IS MY 500-YEAR PLAN?

To build a relationship with my Creator, navigate this earthly journey with Him all the while dealing with the adversity that comes with that so that when I ultimately pass on, I get to spend eternity with Him in Heaven.

So, with that in mind… what have you done today to plan for your next 500 years? That is why I write this to you today.

But…Before I end this post I want to ensure that you don’t misconstrue my message. I am NOT saying don’t plan for your future…not in the least. All I am saying is don’t be so myopic about your earthly future that you forget to plan for your heavenly one. Needless to say but I will say it anyway…one of these futures is going to be slightly longer than the other. You get to choose which one.

My encouragement for you today is to make real a deposit into your eternal account…as soon as you can.

Just something to think about-

Until next time guys-

caution-hard-lesson-ahead-300x276_zps1b5b4c64

I have a friend who by earthly standards is incredibly successful. In fact, when I look at his “Midas touch” in business, I find myself amazed at what he has done and continues to do. I won’t go into all of his business statistics because frankly, they are mind-boggling but suffice it to say, my friend is very gifted with a business mind.

That being said, along with wealth comes all the other “stuff” right? Cars, houses, vacations, etc. everything on this earth that I wouldn’t mind having myself. You see it’s very easy to look at his life and all of his stuff and do what the Bible calls…covet.

Coveting is wanting what someone else has and throughout the Bible we are presented with scenarios that show that coveting never turns out well for the coveter. In fact, coveting is one of the 10 commandments…which is how much God didn’t want us to look at our neighbor and lust for their stuff.

Now, I know that I am not telling any one anything you don’t already know. This is a very old lesson and many of us are humbled each time we find ourselves going down the coveting path. My only purpose in talking today is taking a look at this idea of what he has, versus what I have.

You see, when I mentioned my friend before, I was careful to say “by earthly standards” he is rich. One thing I have learned over time is everything I see around me is temporary…EVERYTHING. It will all go away at some point with the biggest being ME. I am not going to live forever nor do I want to…at least, here.

(Side note: I do believe I will live forever in another place that is being prepared for me and there, coveting and comparisons to other people all go away.)

My point is when I compare what I have accomplished to what he has accomplished, it is very easy to think something went wrong however, I am very quick to point out to all of you that is EXACTLY what Satan wants you to think. He wants you to think you are a failure and you aren’t worth anything.

WRONG…

The Bible tells us:

Jeremiah 29:11-14 (ESV) 11 For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. 12 Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. 13 You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart. 14 I will be found by you, declares the Lord..

The Bible also tells us this:

Matthew 6:19-21 (ESV) 19 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

So as I continue to ponder the “why” of my of my supposed earthly “predicament” as to why I am not earthly rich, I am reminded of the lesson God wanted me to understand in the first place;

Each day of my life, I am depositing my future wealth into a far better place than this temporary one called earth.

Please remember this guys-

I hope that statement above will give you hope as it does me. Frankly, if I believe it faithfully, it will allow me to spend less time wondering why, and more time enjoying the life God has blessed me with right now.

Would that make a difference for you too?

Until next time guys…
